Major Monday: Psychology

Psychology is today’s Major Monday feature.  Having a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I thought it would be good to provide information on it!

Have you ever wondered why people behave and think the way they do?  Curious about how the mind works?  Have you always wanted to help people?  If you answered yes, psychology may be a field to consider.

Description:  If you major in psychology, you will learn about mental and behavioral processes.  You will also study the history of psychology and the various theories.  Research, case studies, and experiments will be utilized throughout coursework.    A degree in psychology is a great foundation for so many different careers.

Education:  There are entry-level positions with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in various fields.  These are usually found in a human or social services department.  However, for a more specific career path, such as social work, psychiatry, school psychology, or health psychology, you will need a graduate degree.  You can also become a guidance counselor! 🙂

Job Outlook and Salary: Because a degree in psychology can lead to so many different jobs, it is difficult to pinpoint a specific salary and job outlook.  Therefore, here are a few with a graduate degree:

  • Psychologist: 2012 median pay was $69, 280 and the job rate is expected to increase by 12% by 2022.
  •  Social Worker: 2012 median pay was $44,200 and the job rate is expected to increase by 19% by 2022.
  • Rehabilitation Counselor: 2012 median pay was $33,880 and the job rate is expected to increase by 20% by 2022.
