Guidance: A Year in Review (13/14)

I can’t believe the school year is going to be done in 2 weeks.  Where did the time go?!  (and you would never know we are almost done with this dreadful weather!)

keep calm

Looking back, a lot has happened over the course of the year…a lot of great things that are worth sharing!

The school year began with getting to know the freshmen and kicking off the application process with the seniors.  We hold our annual College Information Night and Financial Aid Night for seniors and their parents.  It is a busy but fun time of year!

A big day in the fall for us is the Testing and College Fair Day.  On this day, the freshmen take the ACT Explore test while the sophomores and juniors take the PSAT Exam.  We also have our college fair on this day.  Our 3rd and largest so far, we had almost 40 colleges and universities spend their morning with our students providing information and answering questions.

We finally decided to embrace social media!  This blog, as well as Twitter and Facebook, provides another method to get information out to students and parents.  If you have any suggestions or ideas for a topic, please let us know!

At mid-year, guidance met with all of the freshmen as well as sophomores.  We use this time to meet with the students one on one to see how classes are going, talk about any concerns, and to make sure they are on the right track.

Beginning in January, the guidance department began College Planning 101 for Juniors.   We hosted an after school workshop once a month that focused on a college planning topic.  We talked about the difference between the SAT and ACT (click here to read about score reporting), building your college list, and how admissions decisions are made (click here to hear a podcast that describes how a college application is read).  The students who took part in these were engaged, seemed eager to learn new information, and had great questions.  We look forward to beginning our workshops in the fall and cover many more topics!

The First Annual Lunch with Alumni was held this year.  Alumni with various college experiences and/or backgrounds were invited back to have lunch with the seniors and answer questions about the college experience.  The feedback from seniors told us that they really enjoyed hearing about college life from students who are currently or have recently been through it.  We can’t wait to do it again next year.

The seniors kept us very busy this year with their college applications.  We processed over 600 transcripts!!  We love to hear where seniors decide to go.  We have students attending schools in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York, Vermont,  Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.  We even have some headed to Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin, and South Carolina.  We wish all of the graduates the best of luck!!!

The college planning process with the current juniors is in full swing.  We recently had our annual College Information Night for the juniors and their parents.  A couple of weeks ago, we did workshops with all of the juniors to prepare them for requesting letters of recommendation and what they need to do to prepare for the fall.

Classes are wrapping up and finals are next week.  I am sure many students are feeling the pressure and stress of finishing up with the school year strong.  While preparing for exams, read this post I wrote not too long ago about helpful study tips.

We wish all of the students the best of luck on their final exams and hope they have a wonderful summer!
